I'm referring to having the card do the encoding of a 5.1 signal, not just allowing a pass through. I'm curious if anybody else has 5.1 via an optical cable working in windows 10, and what sound card you're using. I have just one optical cable that goes from the PC to the home theater receiver, and the HDMI output from my video card goes directly to my projector, and my receiver doesn't have any HDMI ports so that's not an option.) (I've got an ALC898 Built into my Intel Motherboard, and had this working under Windows 7. I know that there's issues with getting Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect to work under Windows 10 if you have a Realtek audio chipset that Microsoft has acknowledged.
